Introduced in 1775, the First U.S. Navy Jack resurfaced on US Naval ships following the first anniversary of the 9/11 terrorists attacks as a temporary substitute for the fifty star jack "during the Global War on Terrorism."
The rattlesnake is symbolic of resistance and the phrase "Don't Tread on Me" was coined during the American Revolutionary War. The rattle has thirteen layers representing the thirteen original colonies. "The snake does not strike until provoked, a quality echoed by the phrase Don't Tread on Me."
This flag has also been flown by individuals and businesses as a sign of political protest.
